New isn’t always better

There are several things that I do that amuse a certain demographic of my loving friends- the smart one’s who listen to ‘Les Savy Faux’ on their iPad’s and wear Deth Killers of Bushwick t-shirts.

They snort in exasperation and hold their nose high up to my practice of watching movies at the movie theater.  “Why?!  You can watch it online!  Netflix it dude!”  They offer.

They would gleefully point out how inefficient my hardcover books utilize the limited space in my apartment.  “You should just get an iPad and download eBooks.”  They’d advise.

The same points would be made about my recent subscription to the NY Times.

I am current with the latest technologies- believe.  But this is why I prefer the tactile sense of paper on my fingers when turning the page.  Holding the mass of literature that I consume is a part of reading that no tablet can ever reproduce.

The satisfaction of paying for a movie ticket or buying an album or picking up a book from the shelf at the bookstore completes the transaction.  My money for these tangible goods.  The internet is great but there are many shortcomings..  I don’t want to watch a movie on my computer screen at a table-for-one.  I don’t want to watch TV on my cellphone, and I don’t enjoy the hollow experience of reading a book on an e-Reader.

I still use bookmarks.
