Dark Matter

Dark Matter premiered on the Syfy channel in 86 countries shortly following its U.S. debut on June 12. From Prodigy Pictures, Dark Matter is a 13-part drama that follows the crew of a derelict spaceship who are awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Facing threats at every turn, they must work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal and hidden secrets. The series is created by Joseph Mallozzi (Stargate) and Paul Mullie.

The direction that was settled on ‘Space Metal Gray’ utilizing the distressed and beat-up nature of metal that naturally occurs during the trials and tribulations of this crew.

Alt. Blue + Red options

This was a more graphical abstract treatment of the show packaging, using stars and constellations that stretch to underscore the FTL (Faster than Light) travel of the Raza – the crew’s ship.

Alt. Industrial Space Direction

The future of humanity’s colonial expansion into the stars isn’t pretty and made up of sleek white surfaces, this is a grungy industrial expansion into space and this direction was meant to highlight the industrial megacorp future atmosphere that the crew would mostly be setting to negotiate through their adventures.

Process

A lot of emphasis was placed on the design of the logos. Originally the ‘Dark Matter’ logo pictured below was the approved logo but that was later reversed because Syfy decided to keep the logo similar to the one used in the comic books. I enjoyed working on this show can consider the Dark Matter/ Killjoys era as a renaissance of Syfy returning to its true roots.
