Sketch/Cartoon Fundamentals

Hello all,

As I mentioned in my last post, my postings would be less frequent. I am very very busy and cannot find the time to pursue my personal projects and personal lessons until the end of July.

Feeling a little guilty about slacking off, I decided to loosen my hands a bit and picked up a pencil to draw. I have been concerned about my (lack of) flow for a while now. This is an important skill that I think many CG artists overlook. The ability to draft out rough thumbnails and accurately articulate your visual ideas are skill sets that will serve you well as proper handwriting does – that is – you may not think it’s important, but these things make all the difference in leaving a good impression with your peers or getting approval from your boss.

John Kricfalsui (pronounced Kris-falusi), aka John K. Is a brilliant Canadian animator. John K has created the Ren & Stimpy show, the Ripping Friends, and is a founder of his own animation studio. John K has a wonderful blog which essentially is devoted towards creating better habits in cartoonists. Check it out. (Remember that this is not free, John offers his expertise, experience and most importantly, his time on his blog and depends on donors to keep the blog running.  Please donate whatever you can, when you can.  Thanks.)

I started with Lesson 1 – Construction of the Head. I intend on spending another week on this lesson, during whatever free-time I can find. After I nail this down, i’ll move on to the other valuable lessons.

Here’s a very quick sketch of what i’ve managed to pick up after spending a night studying John K’s lesson on constructing cartoon heads.
